Here is an example of a tiled Background:
Apart from the fact that you can't easily read the text because of the colour, look at the tile, the image that you see is actually 100x100 so to fits the space of this page, it tiles, you can see the joins of the tiles.
The more of a pattern that your background image has the more this tile effect will be noticed, some websites leave the tiling effect and the joins in place, others clients do not want to see the join.
Therefore when choosing a background image you need to think of the tiling effect, the problem with patterned background images, is that you can't easily make them to fit a page, as each page will be a different size, also sometime when a web page is displayed in a browser it can change size, so altering the tiling effect.
It is generally safer to use as a background a single colour.
As you can see here, the page background is the orange image, and where the text is, is a white background, I have made it white so that you can read the text, otherwise it is very difficult to see.
